This discipline includes the following research directions: Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphy, Petroleum Geochemistry, Petroleum Reservoir Geology, and Exploration, Appraisal and Development of Petroleum Resources. Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphy is the study of Sequence Stratigraphy, Basin Geology, Petrology, Sedimentology, Lithofacies paleogeography, Diagenesis and Diagenetic Evolution History, and Geochemistry. Its objectives are to enable students to master theories on the formation and evolution of oil and gas reservoir, reservoir heterogeneity and their evaluation techniques. Through systematic study, students would be able to investigate the origin and controls on reservoir formation, to apply theoretical research in oil and gas exploration and development and in Environmental Science, Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Geochemistry, by integrating geological, geochemical and geophysical theories and technologies. Petroleum Geochemistry is the study of geochemical characteristics of oil and gas and source rocks. The Petroleum Geochemistry features in a combination of basic and applied science: it is not only of important research significance—focusing on the systematic theoretical study of commodity organism on the Earth, tackle problems like the origin of life, and evolution, enrichment and extinction of organism; but also of strong application value—providing theoretical and technical support for efficient production and development of oil and gas fields. As an important inter-disciplinary area of Petroleum Natural Gas Geology, and Oil and Gas Reservoir Engineering, Petroleum Reservoir Geology is mainly about the study of geological and geochemical characteristics, and genesis and control mechanisms of oil and gas reservoirs, systematic introduction of principles and methods of Petroleum Reservoir Geology, including reservoir formation and evolution theory, heterogeneous reservoirs and its evaluation, water flooded reservoir and parameter variation. Its objectives are to enable students to use geological, geochemical, geophysical theories and technologies to carry out research on reservoir genesis and control mechanisms. Exploration, Appraisal and Development of Petroleum Resources is mainly concerned with the study of prospect assessment of petroliferous basins, economic evaluation of resources and calculation of reserves, digital oilfield, and detailed reservoir description in the mid and late stage of oil fields development, remaining oil distribution, reservoir simulation and development dynamic analysis.
